After moving to London in 1996, Maarten graduated in 1999 from L.A.S. (London Animation School, part of Central saint Martins). He did freelance gigs there for companies such as The Mill, Passion Pictures, StudioAKA, Glassworks, Seed Animation and many more as (lead) character rigger, creative director and 3D animator. When returning to The Netherlands in 2012 he remained active in the creative industry making AAA games, commercials and movies. On the production of the movie 'The Little Vampire' he worked with Michiel van Iperen. Together they are Ectenic, aiming at wild and non-conventional animation whilst not losing an eye on a robust and no-nonsense pipeline.
Coming from a classical art and design background, Michiel was inevitably drawn into the realm of CGI. After moving to Amsterdam he worked in companies such as Lostboys International, GuerrillaGames, Motek and StormPostproductions. He filled various positions from 3D artist to animator to animation lead on projects including De Sprookjesboom, TerreDesHommes-Sweety, and Killzone. He has done freelance jobs in Amsterdam for 15 years. He animated for 'The Little Vampire' together with Maarten Heinstra. Combined they call themselves Ectenic, making cool animation projects with a hands on, straightforward approach..
